Beaminster Festival 2019

The Beaminster Festival has a tradition of snapping up BBC Young Musicians finalists – Natalie Klein, Alison Balsom, Nicola Benedetti and Martin James Bartlett have all performed at the Festival. You may have noted that the BAFTA awards and Meghan and Harry both followed our lead by booking saxophonist, Jess Gillam and cellist, Sheku Kanneh Mason!

This year the Beaminster Festival is pleased to present 2 BBC Young Musicians of the Year on the same day!

Few who followed the 2018 BBC Young Musician will forget the astonishing performance on the piano by the winner, then 16 years old, Lauren Zhang.  Judges lauded her musical intelligence of a quality far beyond her years.  This huge programme promises to be an unforgettable performance and includes Beethoven, Brahms and Chopin.

Emma Johnson MBE also won BBC Young Musician in1984 and is one of the few clarinettists to have gone on to make a varied and sustainable career.  Emma is known not only for her peerless performances of the gems of the clarinet repertoire, but also for her innovative collaborations with other musicians. In this concert, she teams up with the superb musicians, John Lenehan, piano, and Paul Clarvis, percussion. They explore some of the elements – ragtime, cakewalk, popular song, habanera, negro spirituals- which fused together to create jazz at the beginning of the 20th century.  Emma will introduce all the pieces in an entertaining and informative programme of music to get your feet tapping and your fingers clicking.
