Coastguard warning against jumping from piers into the harbour

There has been a large increase in recent weeks of young adults jumping from the piers at West Bay into the harbour.

A group of teenagers has also been witnessed jumping from one pier, swimming across the harbour mouth and climbing out on the opposite pier, all whilst boats are using the harbour entrance.

Despite all of the displayed warning signs, the efforts and regular interventions from the Lifeguards, Coastguard, Police and Harbour Team, these activities continue, and it is only a matter of time before there is an incident, the local coastguard team warns.

The message from the Harbour Team and Coastguard is: “Do not jump from the piers into the harbour. You are putting your own life at risk, as well as the lives of other harbour users and endangering fishing vessels and pleasure craft.’

“We want you to have a fantastic time this summer, but we only want you to take home happy memories. Don’t jump into the unknown. If you find yourself in difficulty or if you are concerned for others, do not hesitate to dial 999 and ask for the coastguard.”
