Three Cane Whale at Sladers Yard July 13

Sladers Yard in West Bay has a treat in store at 8 pm on July 13th.
3 Cane Whale ‘At the Pictures’ Acclaimed multi-instrumental acoustic trio performing live to 12 short films specially produced for them by filmmakers and visual artists in partnership with the 2017 Filmic Festival, St George’s Bristol and The Watershed.
Three Cane Whale’s music has often been described by critics and audiences as “cinematic”, rooted as it is in specific landscapes and journeys, and now they are bringing film into the heart of their live performance.
Commissioned by and produced in partnership with St George’s Bristol, the Watershed, and the 2017 Filmic Festival, ‘At the Pictures’ sees the band performing live to twelve brand new short films created by thirteen filmmakers & visual artists in response to 3CW tunes of their choice – including cutting-edge animations, lo-fi shadow-puppetry, alfresco contemporary dance, and slowly shifting landscapes from Cornwall to the Lofoten Islands.
As intricate as a team of watchmakers, as spare as a mountain stream, uplifting and elegiac in equal measure, their music encompasses both a cinematic sweep and an intimate delicacy, in which “the aroma of muddy leaves and old nettles is almost tangible” (The Observer).
The musicians:
Paul Bradley – acoustic guitar, miniature harp
Pete Judge (Get the Blessing) – trumpet, cornet, rotary-valve tenor horn, dulcitone, harmonium, chimes, glockenspiels, lyre-harp
Alex Vann (Spiro) – mandolin, bouzouki, bowed psaltery, tenor banjo, zither, hammered dulcimer
Expect a stage strewn with upwards of 15 instruments (some familiar, such as trumpet, mandolin, & acoustic guitar; some beguilingly unusual, including the eerie bowed psaltery & a late-Victorian Scottish acoustic keyboard called the Dulcitone), allowing for some striking multiple instrumental combinations and an overall soundworld unlike any other.
